POND BRIEF

NOTE: this is copied from Capella GHPC Level 2, Unit 8

You have a client who would like you to build them a pond in an informal shape approximately 2m x 3m. It should be at least 45cm deep. They would also like to have a small cascade.

Research various types of liner including performed plastic & fibreglass. Get a price for the various options.

Consider whether you will use underlay or some other alternative and budget for this.

Cost up using liner for your cascade or a preformed type.

A pump will be required: - price up various options appropriate to the size of your pond and cascade.

Your client expressed an interest in have some fish in the pond. What & how many would be suitable for a pond of this size?

Once you have decided which materials and stock you will use, write up your notes for homework to be handed in next week.

Pond calculations

W = Width L = Length D = Depth V(m) = volume(metres) V(l) = Volume (Litres)

Formula for pond liner area

Area required = (W + 2*D) * (L + 2*D)

Formula for pond volume

V(m) = L X W X D V(l) = V(m) * 1000

Calculating pump flow rate required for a cascade

The flow rate needs to account for the size of the lip of the cascade.
e.g. Lip of cascade = 50cm, means we need a flow rate of 100litres / min or 600 Litres / hour. see table below: NOTE: this assumes height of cascade has already been accounted for, i.e. the flow rate is that given for the height of the cascade. Check specs on pump for this.
